I’ve just started reading an autobiography by former pro cyclist Charly Wegelius, called Domestique, which lays bare his career as a committed supporting teammate propping up fellow riders’ on their efforts towards victories.
From the contributing author’s note, the book is outlined as, “the story of the middle of the bunch, the story of the riders who go to work each day having sacrificed everything in their lives – girlfriends, jobs, wives and even their precious youth – to be there and to turn themselves inside out for little more than an average salary and the chance to do it all again the next day.”
Given my previously noted confusion and naïveté as to why pro cyclists pursue anything short of winning, I am very much looking forward to this read.
