Day one of my Hawaii bike rental, I just had to take the bike (Specialized Roubaix Ultegra 58 cm) out for a spin. First up, to drop off my backpack and street clothes at the hotel, then onward along the Queen Kaahumanu highway to the Kawaihae/Waimea turn-off.

I’m glad I made the trip, since I’d hit this stretch again the next two days and got to know the road. Mid-day heat, lots of long rollers with a couple hundred meters of elevation. Sweet wide shoulder but lots of glass and lava rock on the road.
