Second Follow-Up: Progress!

I met with my surgeon again yesterday: 6.5 weeks post-op. Same ortho clinic, relatively same process. I got an x-ray too.

The way the clinic is arranged, patients get a front row seat to watch the doctors review and react to x-rays on their computers. As two images of a knee got pulled up (I could only assume it was mine), I watched my surgeon stare at them for a minute before subtly pursing his lips and nodding approvingly.

Then he came over and, in what I’ve come to know is a hallmark style of his, delivered a few instructions and even less information before sending me on my way.

“Looks good. Set your brace to 90-degrees. You can start physio anytime. Start getting you off the crutches. Come see me again in three weeks.”

I was dazzled. Confused. How do I set it? What kind of physio? I was so surprised, in fact, I forgot to book my next appointment and had to call back later. Happy news, nevertheless!

I’m quietly very proud of myself for gently pushing my limits in terms of keeping my gait and a wee bit more weight-bearing than advised. For instance, the last few days I started using only one crutch in increments during the day, to try to gently work things back into shape. Always listening to my body of course.

After I got home yesterday, I tried walking with one crutch just floating off to the side (for backup) at different periods of the day. Limping and unsteady, but no pain, strong enough and was no worse for wear later on or this morning (and taking no medication of late). This is all very encouraging!

As described in an earlier post, the physiotherapy looks like it will be a real grind, but suddenly I can see light at the end of the tunnel and I am filled with motivation.
