Yep, 14 weeks post-surgery today. Every week I feel a little closer to normal, but I know there’s still a long way to go.
I’m a bit stuck at physio at the moment. I mean, it’s all going quite well, however, I continue to be unable to do leg extensions, which limits my ability to rebuild my quadriceps. I get sharp pain right above and on my kneecap – something my therapist explains is due to my kneecap not gliding normally (stuck due to scar tissue or something) so movements like that put pressure on the quad tendon. I was given very unpleasant sofa stretches to ameliorate things.
I started going for walks this week. No more than about 1 km at a time, and not fast or anything, but steady and with a decently balanced gait. Being unhappy with the leg extension issue at physio, I started wondering if maybe I wasn’t pushing things enough of late – too reliant on the weekly physios to move things along, and not engaging enough the rest of the time. Granted I’m kind of pooped for a couple of days after physio, but still. Walking again is really nice and I have felt no side effects afterward.
The other day, I also put pants on for the first time in three months. I tried sweats a few weeks after surgery but the skin around my knee was too swollen and sensitive. The skin sensitivity and swelling has gone way down in the last couple of weeks. The tissue all around my knee is still quite tender but at least the surface is okay. It’s nice to switch it up, especially with a couple of rainy days recently.
Sleep is still poor-ish but I guess manageable. There’s no rhyme or reason to (or abatement of) the nighttime aches and pains. It doesn’t seem to really matter if I’ve rested all day or been quite active. It also doesn’t matter if I take Advil or Tylenol before bed. Gemini tells me the nighttime aches and pains will last 6 months, so 2 more to go.
