9 weeks post-op today. Without getting ahead of myself, I’m pretty excited to have my next physio tomorrow and a follow-up with my surgeon on Thursday.
It’s been a strong last couple of weeks. After my first physio, and taking it all a bit too far, too fast, I’ve settled into a new and sustainable physical rhythm in terms of rehab. I’m no longer wearing a brace at home anymore, and I have a crutch strategically placed in the kitchen and in the bedroom for longer jaunts, but otherwise I’m walking independently most of the time. I’m doing my quad activations and heel slides routinely each day. I’m sitting at a table to work and often practicing flexion during my work day. I’m showering normally and undaunted. I’m carefully taking stairs one at a time and even did some grocery shopping and gentle yard work yesterday.
My knee gets tired after a while, at which point it’s good to lay down and ice it. Similarly, my calf and my hamstring have a tendency to talk back once in a while, which is a good reminder to watch my gait and my speed. I’m neither quick or steady on that leg, and have to take my time to make sure I’m activating my quad (what little there is) and advancing my foot in time with my leg, so as to avoid hyperextension or straining other muscles.
Sleep still (still!) sucks – the various positions I find myself in just aren’t pleasant for my knee. I wake up routinely with aches and pains. But I guess I’m getting used to it now; it’s not as big of a deal anymore.
I really hope my physiotherapist sees progress, and I really, really hope my doctor authorizes me to drive again. That will be a giant development for myself and my ability to contribute to my family again. Fingers crossed for a positive week ahead.
