Two weeks ago, I was checking into the hospital for surgery. I was relatively pain free, generally not very mobile, but in quite good spirits relatively speaking, and grateful to be tended to so quickly after the accident.
As of today, I think I’m in pretty much the same place. Mentally, I’ve only been in the dumps a couple of times and only for short periods. I am still very limited in what I can do – I haven’t left the house since then, and I get tired rather fast. Evenings are the most challenging, as I wait to take my medications until bedtime. Managing pain is still key to everything.
I’ve finally found some good sleeping positions and I’m resting much better overall.
Yesterday, I cleaned up the house a bit, we had friends over for a couple of hours and then I felt inspired to cook dinner. By the end of it, my knee was sore and I knew I’d overdone it. So today, I’m lounging.
One of the upsides this journey is how everyone in the family is pitching in and learning new skills – case in point, my 11 year old took up the lawn mowing duties this weekend! I’m tremendously proud of him. Mowing the lawn is something I take a weird amount of pleasure and pride in, and to see him do it brought a smile to my face. I think he enjoyed it, too!
My surgical follow-up is on Thursday. If it’s like my hernia repair, I expect it will involve unwrapping and inspecting my knee (for the first time since surgery) to confirm a) no infection and b) successful repair. Then the surgeon will give me some next steps and effectively divest himself of the process, transitioning me to my family clinic and physiotherapist.
One way or another, so long as everything’s gone well so far, it will be time to begin rehab (in the lightest sense of the word). A process I’m both eager and nervous about starting.
